Ahtopol is located 86 km south of Bourgas and it's near Strandja mountain, on a beautiful peninsula is located Ahtopol. It is founded about 430 BC by Greek colonists from Athens. The city became a commercial center, as it was producingcoins. After the barbarian invasions about 5-7 century the town was rebuilt by the Byzantine military leader Agathon, who called the city Agatopolis, which translated from Greek, means "city of happiness" (well, love or prosperity). Archaeologists have shown that the first settlers are from about 5000 BC. With the arrival of the Greeks after the VI century BC. West Coast of the
Black Sea is associated the colonization of Ahtopol and keeping it as a rich and famous seaside town, surrounded by a solid wall. After the founding of the first Bulgarian countryand as a result of continuous wars,

the city frequently changed its’ possession - from Byzantium to Bulgaria and back. On 15.6.1453 the castle fell into Turkish slavery, and the population fled by ship to the Crimea, Kherson and the forests of Strandja, but with the signing of the peace contract in Tsarevo on 05/10/1913, Ahtopol is once again released from the slavery.
Two major fires – on 20/10/1918 year and on 26/10/1935 year completely destroyed the beautiful old town.
Sightseeing
Agatopol fortress was built by the Thracians and Greeks, Romans, later by Byzantines and Bulgarians. Built of big stone blocks and cemented with mortar mixed with mud.

Stone belts are alternating with quaternary bricks and had an initial thickness of 1.95 to 3 meters and a height of 7-8 m.
From the old city of Ahtopol, known for centuries for its beautiful few-stored houses and narrow cobblestone streets, now has remained only one house that the citizens cherish as a symbol of the city.
Greek school was built in the early twentieth century with the money of Greek immigrants in America. Declared a cultural monument.
